A House Divided

One faith, One hope, One baptism

Mark 3:24-25 NRSV
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

John 17:11, 20-21 NRSV
Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one . . . I ask . . . on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Heavenly Father,
Another election season is upon us. Promises are being made, accusations are being leveled, and personal characters and reputations are being impugned, all for the sake of political victory.
It is bad enough as it happens in our communities and nation, but that it is also happening among the people who say they follow You – who say they are disciples of Jesus Christ – is unconscionable.
Our leaders in government need to hear your words, Lord Jesus, that “if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.”
And how much more, O Lord, do your people need to be reminded that it is our unity, our love for each other, and our love for the world that convinces unbelievers that Jesus was God come in flesh.
You have called us to be your agents of grace, your messengers of “good news,” your “Kingdom ambassadors,” and yet we choose to live by the values of the “kingdom of this world” rather than by the values of your “Kingdom of the skies.”
Forgive us, O God!
Change our hearts, O Christ!
Cleanse and redirect us, O Holy Spirit, to be people whose lives clearly show that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Amen.
