I Am a Debtor

Who am I?

Romans 8:12-17 NRSV
12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

I am a debtor, I own not my life; it belongs to another who paid a high price.
I once was a slave, chained to bondage and sin; my flesh was controlling heart, mind, all within.
But now I’m a debtor, new life I’ve been given; now I have a parent, a Father in heaven
Who guides and directs, sets me free from contention, and leads me each day. My life has his attention.
I’m led by the Spirit to walk in the ways of the Father Almighty, the Ancient of Days.
The Spirit of God also helps me follow my Lord Jesus Christ, he the incarnate Word.
So, I live not for flesh, on self’s highway to death; Abba Father provides, giving rest and new steps.
Though my path sometimes leads into suffering or loss, and though circumstance throws me around and I’m tossed,
There is hope in God’s promise that it’s all in his hand, and a day will soon come to join heaven’s “glory band.”
I am a debtor, I belong to another; Father, Son, Holy Spirit, I’ll worship no other.
