Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.

Doesn’t this repeat and repeat the cycle of ‘on again, off again, Simion.’ Do I read this and turn up my nose in pride that I am not like those ancient Hebrews? It is so easy to be asking when will they learn? I cannot even demonstrate the slightest iota of progress in my own walk with the LORD, God, the Almighty.

Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word: But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD. They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them. Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed. And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes: Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.

Here we go again. The cycle continues as the LORD saves Israel’s fat from the fire, so to speak—but they promptly ignore His instructions and turn to the worship of false gods. Over and over again. Never let it be said that they and we do not serve a God of infinite patience.

Do we ask today, “How long, how long, oh, LORD, will your patience last? When will You say, enough, and call Your people home.”

CHETH. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words. I entreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word. I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law. At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments. I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts. The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.

Shouldn't those precious companions of my past be my companions of today? Well, yes, but we have let time and distance and careers and worst of all, faith, interfere with our friendships. Given today’s communication capability, the only excuse is carelessness. I’ve got a gadget laying beside me on the arm of my chair with connects me effortlessly a grandson in Australia or a cousin in the Netherlands.

But why do I let differences in my interpretation of the Scriptures break a friendship? Shouldn’t I be willing to pick up a phone and and engage one of those friends from an earlier life is a discussion of a passage of Scripture? Hummm, am I not inviting the criticism of the Holy Spirit that I’m ignoring His suggestions? Shouldn’t I be willing to pick up a phone and call a brother, called to the same prison ministry, and encourage each other even though we disagree on the interpretation of a passage?

They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul. They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD. The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image. Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass. They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt; Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea. Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

Have you ever read the story of the Exodus in a single sitting? Well, neither have I but this Psalm comes close to a to one of those condensed version of one of the classics of literature. Stripped down to the essential elements, revealing in stark and with only the essential detail, the determination of man to defy the LORD, God, the Almighty. “I am not the master of my fate, I am not the captain of my soul*.” You are my LORD, You are God, You are the Almighty.” Do I submit or do I don’t!

We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known. He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness. And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left. Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

If this isn’t a story of on again, off again, Hannigan. The Israelites did not grasp the significance of the LORD’s work for them in bring them out of Egypt. Now they walked through walls of water. How could they not believe. As we shall see, they were able! They sang His praises. And then they soon forgot.

We need to be vigilant, on guard that we not forget the wonders He has worked on our behalf.

Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise? Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times. Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.

Get ready for a longish Psalm dedicated to the praise of the LORD, God, the Almighty. As we work our way through this paean of praise, let us dig out the various ‘hints’ regarding how he wants to be praised, specifically regarding His directions to His people about acceptable forms of praise. I see a couple of distinct elements. The first is a filling of our mouths and minds with who He is, His very completeness. The second is a plea for Him to replicate like elements in His people.

Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them. He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night. The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river. For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness: And gave them the lands of the heathen: and they inherited the labour of the people; That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD.

There is a sense of peace, even serenity, in this post-flight account. Yes, the Biblical story reports some tension in the story of the quail. But compared to what had been going on in Egypt—Serenity. Isn’t that what we learn to treasure as we draw near to the LORD, God, the Almighty through the Faith cycle? To grow in our belief is to grow in trust. To grow in trust is to grow in commitment. To grow in commitment is be willing to learn to obey. To learn to obey is to grow in faith. To grow in faith is to learn to believe…

Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies. He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtly with his servants. He sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen. They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word. He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish. Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings. He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, and lice in all their coasts. He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land. He smote their vines also and their fig trees; and brake the trees of their coasts. He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillars, and that without number, And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground. He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength. He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

Exodus 3-15 packed into a few short verses. But over what a time span? I don’t recall any specific reference to time, but it had to be significant in terms of weeks, or perhaps months. Compare that to what we and the rest of of the world have experienced in two years, and not over yet, pandemic. Did the people shudder as they watched Moses and Aaron walk into the palace for another conversation with Pharaoh? Quite likely.

What was the likely reaction of the people of Israel at the same time? They knew that whatever form the new plague took, their Egyptian overlords were going to make their lives more miserable.

A question to ponder. Is the plethora of plagues resulting COVID-19 virus a call from the LORD, GOD, the Almighty to mend our ways and draw near to Him? Just wondering!

When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people; He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes; Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom.

One of the amazing parts of the Joseph story is that it never indicates that he lost heart in all this turmoil. Sold as a slave by his brothers to an Egyptian; whose wife tries to ensnare him and Joseph winds up in jail. Fellow inmates, whom he befriended, promptly forget his service to them when they are released. Finally gets out and rises to second command in all of Egypt.

I wonder if any Egyptian got the message to “not touch His anointed”?

ZAIN. Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law. I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.  Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law. Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law. This I had, because I kept thy precepts.

Ish Elohim, as is his usual practice, nails the Word of the LORD, God, the Almighty, precisely into its proper position. It is at the very center of his faith. Look at that second sentence. Yes, the Word is his comfort, but much importantly, it quickens him, ie, it is the very source of life. It protects him from derision—how often do I let fear of derision keep me from a proper witness? Do I let fear of a braying donkey deter me from acknowledgment of the greatest gift ever offered to me? Forgive me, LORD

He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth. He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant: Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance: When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.

Again, we see that the covenant between the LORD, God, the Almighty is one that extends from Abraham for a thousand generations. At 30 years per generation, or 30,000 years (I hope a conservative estimate) there is more than sufficient time to include the gentiles in the package. It is indeed an everlasting covenant.

O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore. Remember his marvelous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen.

This is a very concise listing of how the LORD is to be praised and acknowledged. Ten specific verbs referring to actions that must be taken by His own people routinely.

But, but, but, whoa, this is directed to the seed of Abraham, I’m not, I’m a gentile, is this a woe is me, all is lost. No, hallelujah, Paul offers the very comforting words in Romans 1:16-17: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

See that beautiful, short, immensely powerful phrase, “also to the Greek”. Hallelujah, the grace of the LORD, God, the Almighty has been extended to the Gentiles.
