Profiles in Godly Manhood: Stephen

Lesson 2: Stephen
A Man Full of Faith and the Holy Spirit

Introduction

Stephen, one of the first seven deacons appointed in the early church, is a notable figure in the New Testament. His story, found in Acts 6:1-8:1, illustrates his character, virtues, and the profound impact he had as a follower of Christ. Stephen’s life and martyrdom offer rich insights into the virtues of courage, wisdom, faithfulness, and grace, serving as a powerful example for Christian men today.

Highlights of Stephen’s Life and Ministry

Stephen was “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). As such, he exhibited numerous virtues:

  1. Faith: Stephen’s faith was evident in his selection as a deacon and in his ministry. He trusted God deeply, which empowered him to perform great wonders and signs among the people (Acts 6:8).
  2. Wisdom: When disputes arose, Stephen spoke with such wisdom that his opponents could not refute him (Acts 6:10). His knowledge of Scripture and his ability to apply it to current issues were unmatched.
  3. Courage: Stephen displayed immense courage. Even when faced with false accusations and imminent death, he boldly proclaimed the truth about Jesus Christ and condemned the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders (Acts 7:51-53).
  4. Grace: In his final moments, Stephen asked God to forgive those who were stoning him (Acts 7:60). His grace and forgiveness mirrored that of Jesus on the cross.

Ways Stephen Pleased God

Stephen’s actions were undeniably pleasing to God. His deep faith, profound wisdom, bold proclamation of the gospel, and Christ-like forgiveness exemplified the character of a true disciple. Stephen’s willingness to die for his faith demonstrates the ultimate commitment to Christ, affirming his place as the first Christian martyr.

Key Principles

Stephen’s life offers several principles for men pursuing a godly life:

  1. Commitment to Faith: Just as Stephen was full of faith, men today should cultivate a deep and abiding trust in God, relying on his strength and guidance in all circumstances.
  2. Pursuit of Wisdom: Like Stephen, men should seek wisdom through diligent study of Scripture and prayer, enabling them to speak and act with godly insight.
  3. Courage to Stand for Truth: Stephen’s boldness in the face of persecution reminds us that standing for the truth of the gospel, even in difficult situations, is essential.
  4. Be Spirit-Filled: Seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit, allowing his power to direct your actions and decisions (Ephesians 5:18).
  5. Live a Life of Integrity: Maintain honesty and integrity in all dealings, reflecting the character of Christ in every aspect of life (Proverbs 10:9).
  6. Practice Forgiveness: Extend forgiveness to others, even in the face of wrongdoing, following Stephen’s example of grace (Matthew 6:14-15).
