The Lord of Love

The Lover of our souls

Song of Songs 2:8-13 NRSV
The voice of my beloved! Look he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me: “Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.”

Loving Lord, my God and Father,
Your gracious work of providing our salvation is beyond comprehension; the eternal Son of God taking on a human body is beyond understanding.
To bring our redemption from sin, you leapt “from heaven to the womb, from the womb to the manger, from the manger to the cross, from the cross to the grave,” and from the grave you rose and returned to heaven (Gregory the Great).
Now, you call us, Lord, to know you and experience your presence in full measure; to enter a relationship of mutual love and faithfulness with you. You call us away from bondage to the things of this world that weigh us down, “the sin which so easily ensnares us” (Hebrews 12:1), and to the freedom of pardon and forgiveness through faith in Jesus.
You come to us and live within us, bringing the beauty and joy of everlasting life, such that we exude the fragrance of heaven and bear the fruit of repentance and faith and devotion to you.
You call us your beloved. O, may we truly be your beloved ones and from our hearts call you our Beloved as well – the Lover of our souls, our beloved Savior, beloved Redeemer, beloved Lord and God forever.
Amen.
