Psalm 119:73-80

January 23, 2022

JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments. They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word. I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant. Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight. Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts. Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies. Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

“Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.” Isn’t this a powerful plea? Going a bit further into it, isn’t this plea a daring statement? Do I really, truly want to make the claim before the LORD, God, the Almighty that His law is my delight?

First, do I dare make such a claim if it is a lie? An outright lie to the Almighty God? Will I not be called to account before the Great White Throne for lying to the LORD? How can I be so foolish?

Second through Infinity, very simple if you’re a sinful man, according to the Word, I am foolish, I am a sinner, I have no qualms about claiming such a blatant lie to be a truth claim. I am stupid!

Forgive me, LORD, God, the Almighty. Bring me to You, I am washed by the Blood of the Lamb, fit to enter into Your presence.

Psalm 108:1-4

January 22, 2022

A Song or Psalm of David. O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise thee, O LORD, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

I love it when a Psalm starts with these paeans of praise. Could the LORD be telling me that I should start my day likewise? Something like this: Start with a chorus of “Praise the Savior, Ye who know Him, Who can tell how much w owe Him” and segue into praises for the night’s rest. Conclude with a listing of the challenges for the day and invoking His guidance?

Psalm 107:39-43

January 21, 2022

Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow. He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way. Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the loving kindness of the LORD.

This Psalm has been a powerful story of man’s stubbornness, his shouting of his independence and the LORD, God, the Almighty’s relentless forgiveness of pride filled man. We cannot and will not live lives of purity as demanded by the LORD. He can not allow evil in His presence; we are evil personified without Him.

Psalm 107:32-38

January 20, 2022

Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.  He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.  And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation; And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase. He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

The LORD, God, the Almighty spreads His weal over His people.  Maybe slather is a better word than spreads. He is extremely generous of His benefits. He does not hold back. And our call? We are called to exult Him; to praise Him in the assembly of elders.

Psalm 106:13-23

January 19, 2022

They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul. They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD. The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image. Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass. They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt; Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea. Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

Have you ever read the story of the Exodus in a single sitting? Well, neither have I but this Psalm comes close to a to one of those condensed version of one of the classics of literature. Stripped down to the essential elements, revealing in stark and with only the essential detail, the determination of man to defy the LORD, God, the Almighty. “I am not the master of my fate, I am not the captain of my soul*.” You are my LORD, You are God, You are the Almighty.” Do I submit or do I don’t!

Psalm 107:17-22

January 18, 2022

Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

Another example of man turning to his own devices, not just only rejecting meat and becoming one of the almost infinite varieties of vegetarian , but all who are convicted that they can construct a program that will alleviate their struggles with the LORD, God, the Almighty.\

Psalm 107:15-16

January 17, 2022

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men. For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.

How much time do we spend in down right, out and out praise? I’m afraid that the honest answer is “Very little.” Oh, we preach the gospel on the street corners, but we spend all our time convicting our audience of their sin and very little introducing them to adoration of the LORD, God, the Almighty. We disciple our congregations on the need for obedience as a witness to the transforming power of the blood of Jesus Christ, but very little effort is put into teaching the need for adoration of the Triune God.

Do we, those individuals given the beautiful mission of shepherding the flock, spend much time leading them beside still waters and into green fields? Or is our focus more on getting the plate filled when it is passed?

Psalm 119:65-72

January 16, 2022

TETH. Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word. Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart. Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law. It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

Look at the last two sentences in this stanza. Isn’t it amazing that a scribe who loved the LORD, God, the Almighty as Ish Elohim did would need to have been afflicted to learn the statutes of the LORD? The LAW of the mouth of the LORD is indeed better than thousands of pieces of gold and silver. I must likewise be obedient.

Psalm 107:8-14

January 15, 2022

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High: Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help. Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.

Maybe this Psalm should be named the Psalm of the Goodnesses. A pattern of stating that we should praise Him for His Goodness followed by an example of disobedience, repentance, restoration, and redemption. We need to go through this Psalm looking for clues and commonalities.

One of the principal clues will be the phrase “ they cried unto the LORD in their trouble” or similar. He is standing there, hands out, longing to serve, but needing our acknowledgment of the need. My mother had a son like that; a determined “I can do it myself-er” who still has trouble learning the lesson.

Psalm 107:1-7

January 14, 2022

O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

The Psalmist begins another paean of praises with a general outline for the pattern that each should take. It is a good general pattern to guide us in like instances.

1st is an identification of the characteristic of the LORD, God, the Almighty that is the central focus of the praises. In this case His mercy.

2nd is an identification of how that characteristic was manifested. Here the gathering in of His people, the redeeming from the four corners of the earth; from their nomadic life and lives of want.

3rd His people cried out to Him, acknowledging their need.

4th The LORD responded by leading them to a solution. In this case by the right way to a city of habitation, ie, a livable environment.

I have resisted the temptation to read ahead to see if my supposition is correct. Join me tomorrow for the denouement.

Psalm 106:47-48

January 13, 2022

Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise. Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.

What a conclusion to this Psalm dedicated to the wishy-washy state of Man. A roller coaster dedicated to Man’s inability to worship the LORD, God, the Almighty and stick to it. It is also a recognition of a loving Father’s willingness to forgive His children and call them home again.

Psalm 106:44-46

January 11, 2022

Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry, when he heard their cry: And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies. He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

Time after time after time, the Israelites turned back to the LORD, repented of their rejection of Him and swore fealty to the LORD, God, the Almighty. And He forgave them. What a gracious God they (and we) serve. The sentence that strikes me is the last one. Their oppressors were included in the remorse.
