Crown Him with Many Crowns

Dale Tedder

Sunday Morning Devotion: Week 10

Opening Prayer

Eternal God, our Sovereign Lord, we come before your throne with hearts full of adoration. As we meditate on the words of this hymn, open our eyes to see Jesus in all his glory. May we join the heavenly anthem, crowning him Lord of all aspects of our lives. Awaken our souls to sing praises to the One who died for us, rose victorious, and reigns eternally. In the name of Jesus, our matchless King, Amen.

Crown Him with Many Crowns
By Matthew Bridges
Revelation 19:12

Crown him with many crowns, The Lamb upon his throne;
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns All music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing Of him who died for thee,
And hail him as thy matchless King Through all eternity.

Crown him the Lord of life, Who triumphed o’er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife For those he came to save;
His glories now we sing Who died, and rose on high,
Who died, eternal life to bring, And lives, that death may die.

Crown him the Lord of peace, Whose power a scepter sways
From pole to pole, that wars may cease, And all the prayer and praise;
His reign shall know no end, and round his pierced feet
Fair flowers of paradise extend Their fragrance ever sweet.

Crown the Lord of love; Behold his hands and side,
Those wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For thou hast died for me;
Thy praise and glory shall not fail Throughout eternity. Amen.

Key Principles from this Hymn

  • This hymn exalts Jesus as supreme over all creation, worthy of our highest praise. The opening stanza paints a picture of heaven’s worship, where Christ’s glory outshines all else. This reminds us of Christ’s preeminence in all things.
  • The hymn presents Christ as Lord in various aspects – Lord of life, peace, and love. This comprehensive lordship reminds us that every area of our lives falls under his sovereign rule.
  • The hymn beautifully connects Christ’s death and resurrection with its effects: bringing eternal life and the eventual defeat of death itself. His wounds, “yet visible above, in beauty glorified,” serve as an eternal reminder of his love and the price paid for our redemption.
