Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
I just caught that Paul does not say, "do not look to your own interests." He cautions that I am to keep my own interests of concern and in balance with the needs of others. This has to be taken as a corollary to the prior verse, that true humility demands that others are more significant than myself, but I need to be aware of my own needs. I am not called to work myself to exhaustion and physical deterioration, I am not called to sacrifice commitments to my family without consideration of their needs and my responsibilities as husband and father. Isn't this consistent with Paul's counsel of moderation in all things?
