Fall of 2006—TM Moore approached me with a simple question, certainly in his role as the Principal of the Fellowship of Ailbe and my mentor. “What steps was I taking to adsorb the Word of God and make it the guide of my life?” As I remember, he managed to hide any element of surprise.
His proposed solution, delivered with grace and kindness, was that I should begin a practice taking a verse or two of a Psalm and rewriting it as a prayer or a meditation applied to my life at that time and place. Shocking! I had never dreamed that the Psalms applied to today.
Ok, I could do that and did begin. My meditation based on Psalm 1:1-2 is still preserved in the files of this computer. I might go and look at it again some day. But the shocker came when TM suggested that I publish these on the website of the website. NO WAY! I was not happy about allowing someone, anyone to look behind that veil. He prevailed and 13+ years later Voices Together is still being published daily, except for a brief period earlier this year when cardiac surgery took me out of circulation for a few days.
Yes I highly recommend the practice of writing a daily prayer or meditation on the Scriptures. The Psalms are a good place to start for many of them are the result of a man, often David, wrestling with the realities of his life. But don't stop there; the Spirit will suggest other passages or even topics to explore. I recently spent about a year examining the relationships between belief, faith, trust, commitment, and obedience. VT will begin to look at a simple but very important pair of words on Thursday. Stay tuned and join me in examining the importance of “all things.”
Today's readings in the Psalms:
