Jesus throughout the Scriptures: Psalms 6 (4)

Pray Psalm 110.3, 4.
Your people shall be volunteers
In the day of Your power;
In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,
You have the dew of Your youth.
The LORD has sworn
And will not relent,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”Sing Psalm 110.3, 4.
(Aurelia: The Church’s One Foundation
Your people in Your power, arrayed in holiness,
like dew of morning’s hour shall serve like youth refreshed.
The LORD has sworn and never will He His promise check:
“You are a priest forever after Melchizedek.”

Read Psalm 110.1-7; meditate on verses 5-7

Preparation
1. How are the LORD’s people portrayed?

2. Who is at our right hand? Why?

Meditation

Here is portrayed the ascension, exaltation, and session of our Lord Jesus Christ at the Father’s right hand in glory (vv. 1, 2; cf. Pss. 2, 47; Dan. 7.13, 14). Thus Jesus commenced His reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. His mandate from the Father is simple: “Rule in the midst of Your enemies!” The word “rule” is the same word used with Adam and Eve when they were commanded to “have dominion” over the earth. Jesus’ rule reaches to all His creation, even in the midst of His enemies, to renew the charge to Adam and to begin, through His people, the re-Edening of the world and its peoples and cultures.

This is what it means to pray for the Kingdom of God to come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

King Jesus has a people at His disposal, and we are willing servants, clothed in the beauty of holiness, who go out like the dew of the morning, in the power of the Lord Himself, to take our part in His charge (vv. 3, 4), refreshing and renewing the earth by His grace. Jesus is not only our King, but He is an eternal Priest, like Melchizedek, Who ever lives to make intercession for us as we carry out our appointed work (Heb. 7.20-25).

And though His enemies be great, like vast and powerful armies, yet He will prevail in judgment over them all and be refreshed and exalted as the final battle is concluded (vv. 5-7). Nothing and no one can stand against the will of King Jesus. We therefore must be strong and courageous to serve Him until our part of the world, our Personal Mission Field, comes more and more to express the reality of the Kingdom of Jesus. We know that our work will not be completed until Jesus comes again. But here and now, keeping our eyes on Jesus and the promise of there and then, we put on the righteousness of the Lord and go forth to bring refreshing grace to our world, day by day.

Treasure Old and New: Matthew 13.52; Psalm 119.162
“The LORD said to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’
The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion.
Rule in the midst of Your enemies!” (Ps. 110.1, 2)

“Yet I have set My King on My holy hill Zion” (Ps. 2.6).

“The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
for this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins” (Rom. 11.26, 27; Is. 59.20, 21).

And when the Deliverer comes again, we will be judged by God through the lens of our blessed Deliverer, and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn
who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling
that speaks better things than that of Abel.
See that you do not refuse Him…” (Heb. 12.22-25).

“Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant…Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7.22, 25).

This Surety and Uttermost Savior is the King, and we are His grateful followers.
He leads, we follow. With joy inexpressible.

“I am Your servant; give me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies” (Ps. 119.125).

“We therefore must be strong and courageous to serve Him until our part of the world,
our Personal Mission field, comes more and more to express the reality of the Kingdom of Jesus.”

“Your people shall be volunteers in the day of Your power…” (Ps. 110.3).

A willing people ready to follow and serve our King until the very end.

Reflection
1. Throughout the day, do you think of yourself as one of Jesus’ “volunteers”? Explain.

2. How would you answer a friend who asked you what it means to follow Jesus?

3. In what ways is Jesus advancing His Kingdom through you? How do you expect Him to do this today?

Christ’s people are a willing people. The power of the Spirit, going with the power of the world, to the people of Christ, is effectual to make them willing. They shall attend him in the beautiful attire of holiness; which becomes his house for ever. And he shall have many devoted to him.
Matthew Henry (1662-1714), Commentary on Psalm 110

Pray Psalm 110.1, 2, 5-7.
Meditate on Jesus, exalted in glory. Give thanks and praise for His majesty, beauty, goodness, power, and love. Call on Him to clothe you with Himself, that you may be victorious for His glory in all you do today.

Sing Psalm 110.1, 2, 5-7.
(Aurelia: The Church’s One Foundation)
“Sit by Me at My right hand,” the LORD says to my Lord,
“until I make Your foot stand on all who hate Your Word.”
The LORD sends strength from Zion: “Rule all Your enemies.”
While those who Him rely on go forth their LORD to please.

The Lord is at Your right hand to execute His wrath,
and judge all kings and all lands—doomed sinners in His path.
Then, all His foes defeated, He takes His hard-won rest,
in glorious triumph seated with us, redeemed and blessed.
