The Law of God for Daily Meditation
Morning Meditation
Exodus 20.8-11
8“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day isthe Sabbath of the Lord your God. In ityou shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11For insix days the LORDmade the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORDblessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.”
The Lord’s Day is for “remembering” – which means something like, “give active attention to.” It should cause us to remember His work of creation and the needs of others for rest. How can I prepare for the coming Lord’s day, so that I will use it as God intends?
Evening Meditation
Deuteronomy 5.12-15
12“Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORDyour God commanded you. 13Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14but the seventh day isthe Sabbath of the Lord your God. In ityou shall do no work: you, nor yourson, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who iswithin your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORDyour God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORDyour God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.”
“Observe” means more like “guard.” Against what do I need to guard the Lord’s Day? How should the Lord’s Day be used to review and celebrate God’s saving work in my life?
