A Kingdom Catechism

The world daily invites us to covet.

Q 131: How do the redeemed of the Lord guard against all covetousness?

A 131: The redeemed of the Lord guard against all covetousness by understanding the teaching of God’s Word concerning coveting, learning from the examples of their forebears, submitting to the searching of God’s Spirit, and encouraging one another in contentedness. (Rom. 7.7; Rom. 15.4; Ps. 139.23, 24; Jn. 116.8-11; Heb. 13.5)

The world daily invites us to covet. “Greed is good,” declared a Wall Street character played by Michael Douglas, and the world nods in agreement. The purpose of advertising, the media, and even public education is to create in the minds of consumers a desire for things, in the belief that material things are the source of happiness. But by submitting to the Scriptures, learning from our forebears, listening for the searching and leading of God’s Spirit, and encouraging one another in our faith, we may overcome the siren calls of this covetous age and grow in gratitude and contentment, as well as in praise to God.
