God’s Mercy

Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants; and that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please you, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.  (The Gelasian Sacramentary)

Job 42:1-6 NRSV
Then Job answered the Lord: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore, I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore, I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

Merciful and Almighty God, there is nothing you cannot do.
As our ancient patriarch Job learned of your unconquered power, so may we give our worship to you, “Who alone is wise,” deserving of “glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever” (Jude 1:25 NKJV).
As Job learned that no one could hide from your omniscient sight, remind us today that “there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light” (Mark 4:22 NKJV).
And, O God, as Job saw himself in the light of your majesty and perfections, so may we, too, follow his example and “repent in dust and ashes.”
We want to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly. To this end, help us, O Lord.
Amen.
