Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
Romans 10:6-13 (J. B. Phillips)
“You need not say in your heart, ‘Who could go up to Heaven to bring Christ down to us, or who could descend into the depths to bring him up from the dead?’ For the secret is very near you, in your own heart, in your own mouth!” It is the secret of faith, which is the burden of our preaching, and it says, in effect, “If you openly admit by your own mouth that Jesus Christ is the Lord, and if you believe in your own heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” For it is believing in the heart that makes a man righteous before God, and it is stating his belief by his own mouth that confirms his salvation. And the scripture says: “Whosoever believes in him shall not be disappointed.” And that “whosoever” means anyone, without distinction between Jew or Greek. For all have the same Lord, whose boundless resources are available to all who turn to him in faith. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
William Barclay
The whole Jewish approach was that by obedience to the law a man put himself into a right relationship with God; he earned credit and favour with God . . . The whole thing was a matter of law and of achievement. To all this Paul answers: “Christ is the end of the law.” What he meant was: “Jesus Christ is the end of legalism.” The relationship between God and man is no longer the relationship between a creditor and a debtor, between an earner and an assessor, between a judge and a man standing at the bar of judgment. Because Jesus Christ lived and brought His message to men, man is no longer faced with the task of satisfying God’s justice; he can only accept God’s love. He has no longer to win God’s favour; he has to take the grace and love and mercy which God freely offers to him.
