The Lion of Judah
Genesis 49:9-10 NLT
Judah, my son, is a young lion that has finished eating its prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor.
Revelation 5:5 NLT
But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Father in heaven,
We remember the patriarchs of Israel today, during this season of Advent, because it is through Israel that Messiah came to us. Through the line of the patriarch Judah, Messiah came to us. The Lord Jesus came to us, the One to whom belongs the scepter, the power and authority, to govern your people and all the world. The Lord Jesus is “the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, [who] has won the victory” on the Cross when he conquered death, hell, and the grave, and atoned for our sins. In this season of Advent, our Father, we remember the anticipation of ancient Israel for Messiah to bring deliverance, and we, too, cry out for your deliverance from sin through Messiah Jesus our Lord.
Amen.
