John 19:27-30

John Nunnikhoven

Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!" Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put iton hyssop, and put intto His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Our Lord, in His next to last act, was to be obedient to the 5thCommandment. “Honor your father and mother in all things for this is pleasing unto the LORD.” First, we need to understand the emphasis placed on that commandment; that we need to place a very high value on caring for our parents in all their days. We need to stand on loco parentis as it were. Secondly, He insured that all Scriptures were fulfilled. Nothing left undone, not the simplest of prophecies (Psalm 69:21b).
